AmeriCorps VISTA
The Utah Refugee VISTA Project is a collaboration between AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and the Refugee Services Office. Members assist refugee-serving organizations in Utah in building their capacity to become self-sufficient. AmeriCorps VISTA prepares members for a life of service in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Many of our VISTA members continue to work with refugees being resettled in Utah after completing their year of service.
Each year, over 7,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members across the U.S. commit a year of full-time service to:
- Support an organization to make sustainable change in areas that impact poverty, including education, public health, access to benefits, and more.
- Build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities.
With passion, commitment and hard work, their programs are designed to uplift individuals and communities out of poverty.
VISTAs within the Utah Refugee VISTA Project strive to help refugees:
- Integrate – Involving and incorporating resettled refugees as equals into the welcoming community
- Educate – Bringing both refugees and the welcoming community members together to learn from each other and work together
- Assist – Developing programs to assist refugees in the process of integration to their new home
