Low Vision Services
Low Vision Services is a department of the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DSBVI). We offer assistance to all individuals in the State of Utah who have a significant vision loss. Apply by filling out our Low Vision Application.
Do you, a friend or a family member who has low vision or is blind, have difficulty accessing information or completing daily tasks? Do you, a friend or a family member, struggle with vision in any of the following areas?
- Reading mail, books, newspapers, medication instructions, restaurant menus, or store labels and prices
- Watching television and/or live events
- Viewing and using your computer
- Identifying the settings of your stove, washing machine, or microwave controls
- Creating and working on crafts and hobbies
- Identifying money and colors or telling time

We may be able to help you with:
- Special reading glasses and magnifiers
- Distance vision products
- Improving lighting, reducing glare, and increasing contrast
- Evaluation for correct posture
- Advice on Assistive Technology (electronic devices, computer magnification, and speech)

Our dedicated professional team provides impartial advice when selecting these items. Non-optical products can be viewed and purchased without an appointment in our demonstration room at the Salt Lake City center. Low Vision is caused by many eye conditions such as:
- Macular Degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Stroke
- Cataracts
- RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa)
- Detached Retina
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Keratoconus (Corneal Disease)
Please ensure you have your eyes checked by an eye care professional on a regular basis. Some of these eye diseases are avoidable and can be treated if diagnosed early.
To qualify for Low Vision Services, you must have had an eye exam within the past two years from an ophthalmologist or optometrist of your choice. Then have your eye care professional mail or fax a ‘Low Vision Patient Referral Form’ (link) to our center in Salt Lake City. Upon receipt of this referral, our Low Vision staff will contact you to schedule an appointment for a clinic visit.
